We left from Oakland at 9pm and our flight got in to JFK around 5:30am. It was nice and easy to travel from the airport to Juice's apartment without the normal chaos of NYC. It was so nice, that we decided to take the trains into town and save a few bucks. My only complaint at this point was the humidity. Since the trash hadn't been picked up yet, the streets were unbelievably stinky. I had to hold my breath for most of the walk from the subway to Juice's place. I may have even dry heaved a few times...
I showered and tried not to lay my head down on Juice's ridiculously comfy bed. Our flight had been quick, but it has also been a red-eye, so we were tired regardless. Our plan was to power through for as long as we could take it. Ryan and Juice went out in search of caffeine while I showered. We had breakfast at Balthazar--I had the quiche and it was so, so good. I should mention here that Juice's (6 floor walk-up) apartment is in Soho/Little Italy. He lives above an Italian restaurant actually. It was only two blocks from the Canal Street subway stop and perfectly located for a fun day of investigating Soho. He used to live in Harlem, but he moved...I had forgotten that.

We separated ways after breakfast: Boys to the US Open and me to FREEDOM! I roamed around Soho for a few hours and then made my way down to Ground Zero to see what was going on since I had been there last. Not much--still a big hole. By now I had changed my shirt twice and decided to head uptown to the MOMA. Turns out that was a good idea because the rain from hurricane ike had started to show up and it wasn't messing around. It started to pour just as I entered the museum.
I love to eat in big museums. I know this sounds weird, but they often have really great food--totally overpriced, but whatever. I had a diet coke and an arugula salad while I plotted out my itinerary. The rain continued to pound the city. After a few hours, I knew I had to leave and get back to the boys, so I went out in the rain (with my umbrella) and got back to Soho without getting too wet. Well, no, that's not true. I was soaked by the time I got back to the apartment, but the humidity had been so bad, the rain felt good.
We napped.
We ventured out in the pouring rain for pizza in BROOKLYN. We met up with our good friend Jen Sorenson and also, Summer and Sean at their Brooklyn apartment (after we had stopped for dry t-shirts at American Apparel). Summer suggested we try to go to Lucali's...since it was a downpour, we thought the usual 2 hour wait might be shorter. We were right! We got right in and I'm still thinking about that pizza.
Great dinner and good friends are the best.
We were in bed by 11pm. It was still pouring rain outside.

Ryan and I slept like zombies and awoke at 9am to SUNSHINE and a lovely BREEZE! I was so excited. It was the weather I had been hoping for! After breakfast at Jane (where I practically ran into Kathleen Turner as we were walking out), we spent a little bit of time on Canal Street with the crazies since it was so close to Juice's apartment. And yes, I followed the (not so) sly Asian ladies around the corner, through the secret door, and up five flights of stairs to get my fake bags. They make great diaper bags--no matter how much pumped breast milk soaks into the bottom of the bag, you can rest easy knowing that you only paid $30 for your fake Chanel tote. Make fun of me, I don't care.
We roamed all around Soho again--it was so nice to walk without having sweat dripping down my back...I hate humidity and I have no idea how those of you who live in it deal with it. Really.
We got in a cab at 3pm and headed to JFK. We were home and in our bed by 11pm.
I had a great time. We spent most of our time in lower Manhattan, but I really enjoyed getting to know that part of the city...it was much more relaxing than trying to fit a million things into a day and a half. Next time, we'll pick a different part of the city.

Ryan can hack into my blog and write about his US Open experience...
Thanks to Juice for being a great host--and for giving up his bed.

sounds like fun jen! i all of a sudden really missed ry and juice after seeing the backs of them walking. they are a fun time.
This is me making fun of you for getting a fake Chanel! I still love you.
I didn't know your brother in law lived in NYC. That sounds like a perfect trip to me- a great museum and shopping. Humidity stinks. It is funny because the few times I went to Sacramento from Reno I thought that was humid- at least in comparison to Reno. I am a desert dry kind of girl!
I love Jane. Yummy, right? I haven't been to Balthazar (tragic, yes) and I haven't been to the pizza place- but it looked like the pizza at Patsy's or Lombardi's. I love NYC pizza.
So glad that you had fun. Sorry about the humidity. And that I wasnt here. Come back in late September or early October - beautiful months in the city.
