1,549 square feet to call our own...

Ryan and I have jumped into the dramatic California housing market. We are in the process of buying our very first home. Technically, it's a condo, but whatever. It's new and pretty and clean! It all happened very fast, but it's probably best that way--there's no time to change our minds.

The funny thing about new construction and working with a major home builder is when the time comes to make all the design choices on one's new home. When you walk through the models, you are tricked into thinking all the cool stuff you see like granite counter tops and giant bathtubs will be in your house too! Soon enough, the reality of UPGRADE sets in and you realize that your home will look nothing like the model. In fact, besides the walls, it won't resemble the model at all!

Because it's our first home and we will be poor as a result, we only had a few design choices to make. Do we want brown or grey carpet? Do we want beige flecks in our vinyl flooring? These decisions sound lame to some, but they were very exciting for me! Our condo was meant to be someone else's, but it fell out of escrow at the last moment, so there are a few upgrades that had already been installed. The best one is the giant bathtub in the master bathroom. I about died when I saw it. I'm a bath person and so this makes me very happy. We also got a very nice mantel over the fireplace instead of tile, wider baseboards, an upgraded kitchen faucet, and we are pre-wired for ceiling fans and lights. Of course, those are just a few of the thousands of possibilities, but I'm quite content with my short list of upgrades. We'll make our own changes as time and money see fit.

I'm a little overwhelmed at the thought of having a "real" home to decorate. I'm not very good at putting things together--I just know what I do and don't like. We'll see how it goes.

Lilly and I have been hard at work researching refrigerators! Ask us the difference between side by side and French door models--I dare you.

Our plan...

Cute, cute home Jen.

Ry and I swung by it on our way to Panera last weekend and I got to go through the model. So fun for you guys. And the decorating? I expect a lot of posts about that.

Jen I am so excited for you guys!! When will you move in? How many bedrooms/baths? I for sure need to come out and see it. How fun you are getting to make all those decisions. I am envious. Even if you can't have all the upgrades now, as time goes by you could probably make upgrades here and there and eventually it will be everything you wanted it to be!

yahoo! That is so exciting for you guys! You will love having your own place...even if it means a lot of decorating. You will do fine - just go one room at a time!

So exciting Jen! Has it all set in yet or have too many things been happening too fast?

Hope the move goes smoothly. We can't wait to come up again and hang out at your HOME.
