For those of you who don't know, I'm the Nursery Leader in our ward. Heavenly Father must think I'm one of the best out there because I keep getting asked to do it. I was in the nursery in London, and now here. I haven't done anything in between. The thing about nursery is that it's REALLY HARD. And on so many different levels. Not only are the kids totally out of control and not able to stay focused for more than, oh...4 seconds, but it's a total work out for me. I've had to alter my church dress. I no longer get dressed up for church. Now, I'm looking at t-shirts from the Gap and wondering how I can make them work for Sunday. I layer on the deodorant and always wear my hair in a ponytail. Seriously, I look like I'm ready for a kickboxing class when I leave for church on Sunday mornings.
From the second I step into the nursery room, I'm sweating. It's usually worse during singing time when I'm trying desperately to get them to do the hand gestures to Itsy Bitsy Spider. It's also difficult doing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes over and over and over. It is pretty cool though when the stars align and for about 10 seconds everyone is singing at the same time! I think it's only happened once in the last six months.
Today was an ok day. We seem to have gotten over the potty training hump with most of them. We had one accident today and she (the children will remain nameless for privacy) went behind the puppet theater to take care of business. Her mom popped her head in not 2 seconds later to ask her if she needed to go to the bathroom. Um...too late. She said the funniest thing later.
"My panties are hot."
"What?"
"My panties are so hot."
From what I gathered, her mom must have had to go out to the car to get a change of clothes and hence, the hot panties. The adults in the room thought it was pretty funny. Our lesson was, We Can Love Others, but as usual we only got as far as showing a picture of Jesus. They always answer right when I ask who it is, but when I try to add on from there, it just falls apart. At least they'll know Jesus when they see him, but only if he's wearing his red robe.
